Theres more info about the project there: I personally have been using VTTs for the last couple of years to continue playing with old college friends who live on opposite sides of the country.

Existing VTTs do a good job of mimicking the experience of sitting around a table.

The problem Ive found is that parts of this experience are clunky because an online environment just isnt the same as an in-person one.

This could be due to any number of reasons but Ive singled out two that I want to focus on.

What I believe can solve this problem is to introduce a virtual tabletop that handles the combat rules for you.
